AGARTALA: The CPI(M) Tripura State Committee observe the 137th International Workers’ Solidarity Day today with a series of commemorative events at the party’s state headquarters, the Melarmath Dasharath Deb Bhavan. This year’s May Day holds significant weight as the party seeks to galvanize the working class amidst shifting political and economic landscapes in the state.
The central program in Agartala will be marked by the traditional hoisting of the red flag, followed by a tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the historic eight-hour workday movement.
A Legacy of Struggle: 137 Years of Solidarity
As the global labor movement marks 137 years since the first coordinated May Day demonstrations, the CPI(M) in Tripura has planned a day-long schedule to reinforce the message of proletarian unity.
Key Highlights of the Program:
- Flag Hoisting: Senior party leaders and veteran trade unionists will hoist the hammer-and-sickle flag at the party headquarters at 8:00 AM.
- Martyrs’ Tribute: Floral offerings will be made at the portraits of legendary labor leaders and those who fell during the Haymarket massacre and subsequent labor movements in India.
- Special Convention: Following the outdoor ceremony, a discussion meeting will be held inside the Dasharath Deb Bhavan to analyze the current challenges facing the “unorganized sector” and “scheme workers” in Tripura.
The Current Context: Labor in 2026
The state leadership is expected to use the platform to address several pressing issues currently impacting the workforce in Tripura.
Anticipated Focus Areas:
- Opposition to Labor Codes: Reaffirming the party’s stance against the four new labor codes, which they argue strip away hard-won rights of the working class.
- Unemployment & MGNREGA: Highlighting the demand for increased person-days and timely wage payments for rural laborers.
- Inflation: Addressing the rising cost of essential commodities and its disproportionate impact on daily wage earners.
State-Wide Observations
While the Melarmath office remains the nerve center, similar observances have been organized at all Subdivisional and Divisional offices across Tripura. Local reports indicate that despite the early morning rain in some districts, party cadres have mobilized to ensure that the red flag flies high in tea gardens, rubber plantations, and industrial hubs across the state.
The CPI(M) has called upon all “toiling masses”—including farmers, laborers, and the intelligentsia—to join the May Day programs to send a message of resistance against the “privatization of public sectors” and “anti-people” policies.
