AGARTALA: To mark the occasion of International Workers’ Solidarity Day, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), Tripura State Committee, organized a commemorative program today. The event, held at the Agartala Press Club, brought together banking professionals and union leaders to reaffirm their commitment to the rights of workers in the financial sector.
The program focused on the historical significance of May Day and the evolving challenges faced by bank employees in the modern economic landscape.
“Standing Against Privatization”: Sanjay Datta
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, UFBU leader Sanjay Datta delivered a strong message regarding the current state of the banking industry and the necessity of union solidarity.
Key Highlights from Sanjay Datta’s Statement (Bite):
- Preserving Public Sector Banking: He emphasized that May Day is a reminder to resist the privatization of public sector banks, which he termed as the “backbone of the national economy.”
- Worker Welfare: Datta highlighted the demand for better working conditions, fair wage revisions, and the recruitment of adequate staff to handle the increasing pressure on the banking workforce.
- Call for Unity: He urged all bank employees to remain united under the UFBU banner to protect the hard-won rights of the working class against “anti-employee” policies.
A Platform for Solidarity
The event at the Press Club saw leaders from various constituent unions of the UFBU sharing their perspectives. They noted that May Day is not just a day for celebration but a day for “rededication to the struggle” for social and economic justice.
The committee also used the platform to express solidarity with workers in other sectors, particularly those in the unorganized and informal markets, who are grappling with inflation and job insecurity.
Strategic Advocacy
The UFBU leaders concluded the session by outlining their upcoming roadmap, which includes nationwide advocacy for the protection of banking assets and the rights of middle-class depositors. The program ended with a pledge to continue the legacy of the Chicago martyrs by advocating for a fair and equitable workspace.
