Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a significant boost in the export of Tripura’s aromatic rice, setting an ambitious target of Rs 2 lakh crore. During a high-level review meeting in New Delhi, Shah directed the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) to explore new opportunities for exporting the aromatic rice varieties of Tripura.
Tripura is renowned for its aromatic rice, particularly the “Kali Khasa” and “Biran” varieties, which are cultivated organically and prized for their unique taste and nutritional qualities. Shah emphasized the potential of these rice types in the international market and urged NCEL to capitalize on this opportunity.
In addition to aromatic rice, Shah also highlighted the potential for exporting sugar from cooperative sugar mills, organic cotton, and coarse grains. He suggested exploring partnerships with large companies for exporting fresh vegetables to Gulf countries and special potato varieties.
Setting a target of Rs 2 lakh crore in exports by NCEL, Shah directed the organization to identify three new and specific products for export that are not currently being exported from India. He also instructed that all exports from cooperative institutions be routed through NCEL, ensuring that a significant portion of the turnover and net profit after taxes and operating costs benefit the cooperatives.
Shah’s directive underscores the government’s commitment to promoting agricultural exports and boosting the income of cooperative institutions in the country. By tapping into the potential of Tripura’s aromatic rice and other agricultural products, India aims to expand its presence in the global market and strengthen its position as a key player in the agriculture sector.
