Tripura is making significant strides towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future, with plans to cover all government buildings with solar power systems. The state’s Power Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, made the announcement on Sunday, highlighting the importance of transitioning to clean energy sources.
One key initiative driving this transition is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which over 13,500 families have already registered for solar power installations. This surge in registrations indicates a strong public interest in adopting solar energy in Tripura.
“The demand for solar power in Tripura has increased significantly. As of 1st May, 13,536 registrations were done online,” Minister Nath told reporters during a press briefing.
Early adopters of the program are already reaping the benefits. “For the first time, 70 consumers received Rs 30,902 under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana after installing solar systems in their houses,” Nath stated.
The government has set an ambitious target of bringing 50,000 consumers under the solar scheme by March 2027, which would add 150 megawatts of power to the state’s grid. Currently, 266 households have installed solar plants, with 184 receiving government subsidies. Financial institutions have also disbursed loans totaling Rs 1.75 crore to 95 families for solar installations.
However, Minister Nath also raised concerns about bill payment compliance in Tripura. Of the state’s 987,838 power consumers, only 432,045 pay their electricity bills regularly. Approximately 60% of consumers are not paying their bills, leading to a crackdown on power theft. Between April 2024 and April 2025, authorities registered 1,015 cases of power theft, disconnected 10,779 hook lines, and imposed fines totaling Rs 4.19 crore.
Despite these challenges, the power supply in Tripura remains stable. “There are no power issues in the state. Our peak power demand is 370 Megawatt, and we are currently generating 372 Megawatt,” assured Minister Nath.
With the government’s commitment to renewable energy and the growing interest in solar power among residents, Tripura is on track to become a shining example of sustainable energy development in India.
