Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s announcement to rename the four-decade-old Town Hall in Agartala after Syama Prasad Mookerjee has sparked opposition from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress.
During a program marking the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Saha revealed plans to rename the Town Hall and install a statue of the Jana Sangh founder. However, CPI(M) MLA Jitendra Chaudhury strongly opposed the decision, stating that the structure was built four decades ago and suggested building a new auditorium instead.
Chaudhury emphasized the need for new infrastructure in Agartala, highlighting the lack of available halls to host cultural and social activities. He proposed naming a new auditorium after Syama Prasad Mookerjee as a more fitting tribute to the leader.
Similarly, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha voiced opposition to the renaming, stating that while the Congress is not against honoring renowned individuals, it should be done through the construction of a new auditorium in the city.
Both opposition parties stressed the importance of prioritizing new infrastructure over renaming existing structures, arguing that it would better serve the needs of the community. The debate over the renaming of Agartala’s Town Hall continues as political parties advocate for alternative solutions to honor Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
