AGARTALA: A chilling incident of employer negligence and cruelty has come to light at the G.B. Pant Hospital in Agartala, where a migrant worker is currently battling for his life. The worker, whose body was severely scalded by boiling oil during a workplace accident, has alleged that his employer abandoned him at a railway station instead of providing medical aid.
The victim’s ordeal has sparked outrage among local residents, highlighting the precarious and often unprotected conditions of migrant laborers in the state’s informal sector.
A Workplace Accident Turns into a Nightmare
The victim, a migrant laborer employed at a local eatery, was reportedly performing his duties when a large container of boiling oil accidentally spilled, drenching a significant portion of his body. Instead of rushing the screaming worker to the emergency ward, the shop owner allegedly prioritized “getting rid of the problem.”
The Victim’s Allegation:
Speaking from his hospital bed, the injured worker claimed that the shop owner, fearing legal repercussions or medical expenses, drove him away from the establishment. “He didn’t take me to a doctor. He left me at the station and went away, leaving me to die in pain,” the worker recounted in a statement that has since gone viral on local social media.
Saved by the Kindness of Strangers
While the employer showed a lack of empathy, the local youth of the area emerged as heroes. Seeing the man in a critical state and writhing in agony at the station, a group of local young men immediately intervened.
- Prompt Action: The youths coordinated with the authorities and arranged for an ambulance to transport the worker to G.B. Pant Hospital.
- Medical Status: Doctors at G.B. Pant Hospital have confirmed that the worker suffered extensive second-degree burns. He is currently under observation in the burn unit.
- Absence of Support: The victim noted that since his admission, neither the shop owner nor any representative from the workplace has visited him or offered financial assistance for his treatment.
Demand for Legal Action
The incident has drawn the attention of labor rights activists and local leaders. There are growing demands for the Agartala police to register a Suo Motu case against the shop owner for criminal negligence and for abandoning a person in a life-threatening condition.
”This is a heinous crime. Treating a human being like discarded waste after they have served your business is unacceptable. We urge the police to identify the shop owner and ensure he pays for the victim’s treatment and faces the full force of the law,” said a local social activist who visited the hospital.
A Call for Migrant Safety
This case serves as a grim reminder of the need for stricter monitoring of labor safety standards and the mandatory registration of migrant workers in small businesses. As the victim continues his long road to recovery, his story remains a testament to both the darkest and brightest sides of humanity in the capital city.
