AGARTALA: In a major blow to the household budgets of the common man, retail prices of petrol and diesel were hiked yet again across the country and the state on Saturday. This marks the third consecutive upward revision in less than 10 days, pushing cumulative fuel prices up by nearly ₹5 per litre within a week and triggering severe anxieties across domestic retail markets.
In the latest pricing tranche released by state-run oil marketing companies, the price of petrol has been increased by 87 paise per litre, while diesel has become costlier by 88 paise per litre (varying slightly across states based on localized Value Added Tax and freight levies).
The Anatomy of a 10-Day Fuel Surge
The domestic energy market has broken out of a long period of relative stability as public sector fuel retailers gradually pass on raw material pressures triggered by the ongoing geopolitical conflict in West Asia.
The Sequential Revisions at a Glance:
- The Initial Shock (May 15): Fuel prices were hiked by a steep baseline of ₹3.00 per litre, breaking a prolonged freeze in domestic retail revisions.
- The Second Dose (May 19): Rates were adjusted upwards by approximately 90 paise per litre across major distribution nodes.
- The Latest Revision (May 23): Pump prices surged again by 87 paise for petrol and up to 91 paise for diesel in major metropolitan grids, pushing regional prices closer to historic thresholds.
Kolkata and Agartala Hit Harder Due to Local Levies
Because fuel taxation patterns differ significantly across state borders, the impact on consumers in eastern India has been noticeably steeper than in the national capital.
| Metric / Fuel Variant | Delhi Base Rate | Kolkata / Eastern Region Base Rate | Cumulative 10-Day Surge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol (Per Litre) | Rs.99.51 | Rs.100.64 | Rs.4.74 Higher |
| Diesel (Per Litre) | Rs.92.49 | Rs.97.02 | ~ ₹4.82 Higher |
