AGARTALA: In a significant move toward administrative austerity, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has officially ordered a drastic reduction in the size of his security convoy, effective today. The decision comes as a direct response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national appeal for fuel conservation and reduced government expenditure amidst fluctuating global oil prices and supply chain disruptions.
The Chief Minister, who typically travels with a seven-vehicle escort, has instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to limit the convoy to just three vehicles in addition to his own car.
Austerity Measures Across the State
The reduction of the CM’s convoy is the centerpiece of a broader set of “Green Governance” measures implemented by the Tripura government this week.
Key Policy Shifts:
- Hybrid Work Model: The state government has mandated that 50% of Group C and Group D employees work from home (WFH) on a rotational basis to minimize daily commuting and fuel consumption.
- No Lockdown: Despite the restrictions, the Chief Minister clarified that there is no plan for a lockdown. The measures are strictly “precautionary and voluntary” to manage national resources.
- Strengthening Public Transport: CM Saha announced that the state will pivot toward strengthening the public transportation system to provide citizens with viable alternatives to private vehicle use.
“Simplicity is the Need of the Hour”: CM Manik Saha
While addressing the media today, the Chief Minister emphasized that leadership must be the first to adapt to national challenges.
”When our Prime Minister suggests a path for the nation, he does so with deep thought—just as we saw during the pandemic. Today, we are facing a global fuel constraint. By reducing my own convoy from seven to four vehicles, I want to send a message to every department: avoid unnecessary fuel use. We have sufficient stock, but we must be disciplined,” Dr. Manik Saha stated.
Political and Social Impact
The move has sparked a wider debate in the state regarding the “VIP culture” and the misuse of official vehicles.
- Public Support: Many citizens in Agartala have welcomed the move, noting that smaller convoys will also lead to less traffic congestion during VVIP movements.
- Administrative Reform: Experts believe this could lead to a permanent shift in how government departments manage their transport logistics, potentially saving the state exchequer crores of rupees annually.
Other Key Developments Today
- Education: Earlier today, the CM distributed appointment letters to 865 Postgraduate Teachers at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, urging them to focus on “character building” alongside the syllabus.
- Party Training: The CM also inaugurated the Mandal Training Campaign 2026 for the 8-Town Baradowali area, emphasizing that BJP workers must serve society “beyond elections.”
- Security Seminar: Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu addressed a seminar on “Military-Civil Fusion” at the Assam Rifles HQ, envisioning Tripura as a “Model Security State.”
