AGARTALA: In a historic move aimed at achieving green energy self-reliance and slashing domestic electricity bills, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced a groundbreaking rooftop solar scheme today. Under this ambitious clean energy initiative, the state government will facilitate the installation of 1-kilowatt (kW) capacity household solar panel systems for 1,500,000 (1.5 lakh) families at a token beneficiary cost of just ₹1,000.
The massive grid-connected solar rollout is being hailed as one of the largest decentralized renewable energy drives in the region, designed to fundamentally alter Tripura’s power consumption landscape.
High Subsidies to Modernize Rural and Urban Homes
The real-world cost of a standard 1-kW rooftop solar power system typically ranges between ₹60,000 to ₹75,000. By absorbing the massive financial overhead through combined central subsidies and state green energy funds, the government is providing a nearly 98% financial cushion to low and middle-income consumers.
Key Highlights of the Solar Scheme:
- Target Coverage: 1.5 Lakh households spanning across all eight districts, prioritizing rural, semi-urban, and power-deficit pockets.
- Beneficiary Share: A one-time minimal processing fee of just ₹1,000.
- Power Generation: A 1-kW system generates roughly 4 units of clean electricity daily (approximately 120 units per month), which easily covers the baseline consumption of an average household.
“Turning Consumers into Power Producers”: Minister Ratan Lal Nath
Elaborating on the policy implementation framework during a press brief, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the scheme aligns perfectly with the national vision of expanding renewable capacities while offering direct economic relief to the common man.
”This is a revolutionary step for Tripura’s energy sector. We are offering high-end 1-kW solar systems to 1.5 lakh families for just a nominal amount of ₹1,000. This initiative will not only insulate vulnerable households from monthly power bill anxieties but will also significantly reduce the peak load pressure on the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) grid. Our goal is to turn ordinary domestic consumers into active clean-energy producers,” Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced.
Net-Metering and Financial Relief
The Power Department confirmed that these setups will be integrated with smart net-metering systems. If a household consumes less electricity than what their rooftop panels generate during daytime hours, the surplus power will automatically flow back into the main TSECL grid, earning the consumer energy credits that will further reduce their net utility costs.
The registration portal, field assessment protocols, and nodal agency structures under the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) are currently being prepped. Application drives are scheduled to commence systematically through local block development offices and municipal wards starting next month.
