AGARTALA: In a continuous effort to upgrade urban civic amenities, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder conducted a field inspection of the Battala Mahashmashan (crematorium) and the adjoining market stalls near the Battala Shiva Temple yesterday. The visit was aimed at reviewing the progress of a major ₹85 lakh modernization project designed to ease the hardships faced by citizens during the performing of last rites.
Accompanied by local corporators and AMC engineers, the Mayor scrutinized the drainage systems and stall placements near the temple to ensure a cleaner and more organized environment for both devotees and visitors.
A Multi-Phased Upgrade for Battala
The Battala crematorium, one of the city’s busiest and most historic facilities, has long faced challenges during the monsoon season due to its proximity to the Howrah River. The current redevelopment plan addresses these seasonal issues head-on.
Key Highlights of the Modernization Project:
- Emergency Infrastructure: Construction of a new emergency furnace at an elevated level near the roadside to ensure services remain uninterrupted even during heavy floods or waterlogging.
- Increased Capacity: Installation of two additional electric furnaces to reduce waiting times and enhance operational efficiency.
- Beautification: The project includes the installation of high-mast lighting, a fountain, and modern seating arrangements for grieving families.
- Temple Renovation: The traditional Shiva Temple within the premises is set to be elevated and refurbished with modern aesthetics and amenities.
“Dignity in Death is Our Responsibility”: Mayor
Speaking during the inspection, Mayor Dipak Majumder reiterated the corporation’s commitment to providing a hassle-free and respectful experience for families during their moments of grief.
”The difficulties faced by people during the last monsoon were unacceptable. We are spending ₹85 lakh to ensure that the crematorium is monsoon-ready. I have also inspected the stalls near the Shiva Temple to ensure they do not obstruct the path of those visiting the crematorium or the temple. Our goal is to complete the emergency furnace before the rains hit in June,” the Mayor stated.
Strict Action Against Extortion
During his visit, the Mayor also sent a stern warning against any form of exploitation. He reminded the public that the AMC provides cremation services free of cost and urged citizens to immediately report any demands for bribes or “extra fees” by middlemen or staff at the facility.
The inspection concluded with the Mayor directing the engineering department to expedite the civil works and ensure that the beautification of the Mahashmashan complex is completed within the next three months.
