AGARTALA: In light of the rapidly shifting political landscape in the state, the CPIM Tripura State Committee held a high-level meeting yesterday at the party’s state headquarters in Melarmath. Led by Leader of the Opposition and State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, the meeting focused on a critical assessment of the party’s performance in the recently concluded TTAADC (District Council) elections and the Dharmanagar Assembly by-poll.
With the ruling BJP-Tipra Motha alliance consolidating its hold, the Left Front leadership met to draft a roadmap for the upcoming Village Council elections and to address organizational gaps.
Reviewing the Electoral Setbacks
The meeting served as an introspective session following the unsatisfactory results in the Dharmanagar by-election, where the BJP secured a decisive victory.
Key Discussions:
- Poll Analysis: A detailed review of the vote share in the April 12 TTAADC elections, where the party faced stiff competition from both the BJP and Tipra Motha.
- Alliance vs. Solo Strategy: The committee discussed the decision to contest the Dharmanagar by-poll alone and whether a broader “Secular Democratic” alliance would have altered the outcome.
- Organisational Shortcomings: Identifying booths and subdivisions where the party’s “grassroots connect” has weakened and planning immediate corrective measures.
“A Political Fight, Not Just an Electoral One”: Jitendra Chaudhury
Speaking to the media following the state committee session, Jitendra Chaudhury emphasized that the CPIM does not view these losses as mere numbers but as a signal to intensify their political struggle.
”Regardless of the results, CPIM has a tradition of deep introspection. We have reviewed where we failed to reach the people and how our opponents used their machinery. This is a political fight for the democratic rights of Tripura’s citizens. We are now preparing to take these issues directly to the people ahead of the Village Council polls,” Chaudhury stated.
Roadmap for 2026-27
The State Committee has reportedly directed all district and local committees to begin immediate preparations for the Village Council elections, which are seen as the final litmus test before the next major political cycle.
Future Strategies Highlighted:
- Grassroots Strengthening: Reshuffling local leadership in areas with poor poll performance.
- Youth Outreach: Increasing the involvement of SFI and DYFI members in community service and local issues.
- Public Campaigns: Launching a statewide campaign against unemployment and the rising cost of essential commodities.
The meeting was also attended by veteran leader and Politburo member Manik Sarkar, who urged the cadre to remain resilient and uphold the party’s ideological foundations despite the “temporary electoral setbacks.”
