AGARTALA: Reclaiming their space on the streets against the ruling establishment, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organized a high-intensity street demonstration in the capital city. Spearheaded jointly by the CPIM Purba Agartala (East Agartala) and Banamalipur Regional Committees, the mass rally focused on an array of burning socio-economic crises, including the skyrocketing prices of petrol, diesel, and essential food items, chronic youth unemployment, and failing public infrastructure.
The core of the agitation, held on Friday afternoon at the busy Old Motor Stand area, quickly turned into a fierce critique of democratic suppression, with opposition leaders accusing the BJP-led government of systematically snatching away the citizen’s right to free speech.
The Police Irony: “Law & Order is Unfavorable”
A major flashpoint of the demonstration was the open condemnation of the Purba (East) Police Station authorities. CPIM organizers revealed a striking institutional irony regarding the administrative permission process for the rally.
When the opposition delegation formally approached the local police desk seeking standard clearance for their peaceful demonstration, local police officers reportedly denied or hesitated to issue the permit, stating explicitly that “the law and order situation in the state is currently not favorable.”
Key Dynamic Critiques Raised by Protesters:
- The Double Standard: Opposition speakers questioned how the ruling dispensation routinely advertises absolute peace and ‘Sushasan’ (good governance) across public platforms if its own police stations cite volatile security to block opposition gatherings.
- Weaponizing Administration: The party alleged that local law enforcement is being used as a political tool to muzzle democratic resistance and shield policymakers from public questioning on economic failures.
“The Government is Afraid of the Public’s Voice”: Amal Chakraborty
Addressing the massive gathering of party cadres, CPIM State Committee Member Comrade Amal Chakraborty launched a scathing ideological offensive against the state administration, pulling no punches regarding the police department’s stance.
”The BJP government has completely ruined the domestic budget of the common man. Prices of fuel, rice, pulses, and vegetables are hitting records daily, yet they want the public to remain silent. They are trying to strip away our fundamental right to speak out.
Look at the sheer mockery of governance here—when we ask for permission to hold a rally, the Purba Police Station tells us that the law and order situation is bad! If the law and order under your watch is that fragile, the Home Minister should step down immediately. The reality is they aren’t worried about law and order; they are simply terrified of the growing public anger against unemployment and inflation. No amount of police intimidation can stop the red flag from fighting for the people,” State Committee Member Amal Chakraborty stated.
The protest rally concluded with senior leaders calling for an escalation of block-level agitations across urban centers, warning that any further attempts by administrative bodies to choke democratic spaces would be met with unrestricted civil resistance.
