AGARTALA | July 2, 2026: Aiming to address deep-rooted operational loopholes and infrastructure gaps inside the state’s premier medical facility, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) today organized a demonstration outside the Directorate of Health Services. The mobilization concluded with a dedicated party delegation submitting a comprehensive eight-point charter of demands to the Director of Health Services.
The immediate focus of the deputation was the urgent modernization of the Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, which currently faces an immense patient load from all eight districts of Tripura.
Pointing Out Structural Backlogs inside the Capital’s Premier Hospital
Addressing media representatives outside the health directorate gates, SUCI (C) leadership argued that despite loud administrative claims of transforming Agartala into a regional medical hub, ground realities inside the GBP Hospital wards present a completely different picture. The party highlighted that ordinary citizens from economically backward backgrounds are bearing the brunt of broken machinery, long waiting lists for critical surgeries, and a severe shortage of essential medicines.
The political wing asserted that cosmetic policy changes, such as modifying private practice schedules, will yield no results unless the core infrastructure is fundamentally reinforced.
”GBP Hospital is the last hope for thousands of poor families across Tripura. Yet, patients are routinely forced to buy basic medicines from private shops outside, and critical diagnostic machines remain broken for weeks. We have placed this 8-point deputation today to tell the Health Director that this institutional neglect must stop. We need immediate funds for trauma care expansion, round-the-clock availability of free life-saving drugs, and a transparent system that treats poor patients with dignity. If these eight structural demands are not addressed, SUCI (C) will launch an intense statewide civic agitation,” a senior party executive stated to reporters.
Key Demands Highlighted in the 8-Point Charter
The formal memorandum presented by the SUCI (C) delegation to the health authorities includes the following key demands:
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Immediate structural expansion of the emergency units, ICU beds, and general wards at GBP Hospital to eliminate bed shortages.
- Continuous Drug Supply: Ensuring zero-lag stocking of essential medicines and surgical consumables in the hospital’s free distribution counters.
- Repairing Diagnostic Machinery: Fast-tracking the maintenance of high-end diagnostic gear, including MRI and CT scan systems, to minimize referral dependency on private centers.
- Filling Staff Vacancies: Recruiting adequate nursing staff, laboratory technicians, and grade-IV workers to manage the intense patient-to-staff ratio.
- Fair Patient Management Protocols: Establishing a clear monitoring mechanism to check that rural patients traveling from long distances receive immediate attention without middleman interference.
The Director of Health Services accepted the 8-point deputation and assured the delegation that a departmental review would be ordered to assess the infrastructure requirements of GBP Hospital on a high priority.
