Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recently inaugurated a Mock Parliament organized by the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Morcha in Agartala, highlighting the importance of democratic processes and constitutional values. During his address, Dr. Saha reflected on the dark chapter of the Emergency period in India’s history, emphasizing the erosion of fundamental rights and constitutional freedoms during that time.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the Emergency, which lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, saw a suppression of dissent and consolidation of power by the government. Dr. Saha noted that women were among those who suffered greatly during this period, enduring various forms of injustice and oppression.
He stressed the significance of initiatives like the Mock Parliament in educating the youth about the value of democracy and the importance of protecting civil liberties. Dr. Saha commended the efforts of the Mahila Morcha for organizing the event and providing a platform for young individuals to engage with the country’s political and constitutional framework.
The Mock Parliament saw active participation from students and youth representatives who debated and discussed contemporary issues while simulating parliamentary procedures. Dr. Saha highlighted that such exercises not only educate but also empower the younger generation to actively participate in democratic discourse.
Various political figures including BJP State President Rajib Bhattacharjee, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Sushanta Chowdhury, MLA Bhagaban Das, BJP’s state Mahila Morcha President and former MLA Mimi Majumder were also present at the event.
The program concluded with a renewed call to uphold democratic ideals and ensure that the lessons from history, particularly the dark period of the Emergency, are never forgotten. The event served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democracy and protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
