AGARTALA | July 9, 2026: With the urban local body elections drawing closer, intense public resentment has boiled over against the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration in the Ward No. 14 sector. Local residents of Ranjit Nagar today hit the streets in protest, leveling severe allegations of absolute developmental stagnation, systemic negligence, and fiscal unaccountability against their elected local Ward Corporator, Smt. Snigdha Das.
The agitating community members openly questioned the transparency of the civic body, asking where the central development funds allocated over the last five years have vanished.
Chronic Waste Accumulation and Infrastructure Collapse
The primary flashpoint of today’s mass public outburst is the complete collapse of the neighborhood’s drainage network. Residents walked reporters through the narrow lanes of Ranjit Nagar, pointing out massive, clogged arterial drains overflowing with black, toxic sludge, household plastic waste, and stagnant monsoon water.
The community stated that despite submitting consecutive written petitions to the ward office, the AMC sanitary inspectors have completely failed to deploy cleaning crews to de-silt the blockages. Consequently, even minor monsoonal showers cause sewage water to back up directly into the courtyards and kitchens of local households, turning the entire residential cluster into a dangerous breeding ground for mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria.
”For the last five long years, the families of Ranjit Nagar have not seen a single touch of genuine urban development. Look at our main roads—they are filled with deep, hazardous potholes that make it impossible for ambulances or auto-rickshaws to enter our neighborhood during medical emergencies. Our drains have not been cleared or scientifically desilted in years. Whenever we approach our Ward Corporator Snigdha Das with our grievances, we are met with empty bureaucratic excuses. As the municipal elections are knocking at the door, she is suddenly trying to make false promises again. We want a clear answer from the AMC Mayor: where have the multi-crore public development funds allocated for Ward 14 been spent? If emergency construction work on our roads and concrete drains does not begin within the next week, the residents of Ranjit Nagar will launch a total blockade of the ward headquarters,” an agitated local community organizer stated to reporters.
Rising Discontent Ahead of Crucial Municipal Elections
Local political observers note that the intensifying civic protests in Ward 14 reflect a broader trend across peripheral municipal sectors, where developmental disparities have become a major talking point ahead of the upcoming local body polls. The residents of Ranjit Nagar highlighted that while central parts of the capital city benefit from smart city funds, their taxpayers’ neighborhood continues to suffer from poor civic planning.
The protesting families warned that they will completely boycott all upcoming door-to-door political campaigns by the ruling panel unless senior AMC engineering cells personally visit Ranjit Nagar to execute a comprehensive, transparent layout for constructing permanent, covered concrete drainage channels and blacktopping the broken arterial road network.
