AGARTALA: To mark the 165th birth anniversary of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore, the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) organized a solemn tribute and cultural program at Rabindra Kanan yesterday. The morning began with a floral tribute at the statue of the Nobel laureate, led by Hon’ble Minister for Industries & Commerce and OBC Welfare, Smt. Santana Chakma.
The serene surroundings of the park, which holds a historical connection to the poet’s visits to the state, echoed with the melodies of Rabindra Sangeet as the city paid its respects to the “World Poet.”
A Floral Tribute to the Visionary
Addressing the gathering after offering her floral respects, Minister Santana Chakma highlighted the profound influence Tagore had on Tripura’s cultural and administrative history.
”Rabindranath Tagore was not just a guest of the Manikya Kings; he was a visionary whose thoughts continue to guide our society. His literature emphasizes universal brotherhood and a deep connection with nature—values that are more relevant today than ever before. It is our responsibility to ensure that the younger generation stays rooted in the cultural legacy he left behind,” the Minister stated.
Young Talents Take Center Stage
The highlight of the morning program was the active participation of children. Dressed in traditional attire, young artists from various cultural organizations across Agartala presented a medley of performances.
Cultural Highlights:
- Choral Music: Group renditions of Tagore’s iconic songs celebrating the season of summer and the spirit of devotion.
- Recitation: Young children captivated the audience with emotive recitations of poems from Gitanjali and Sishu.
- Classical Dance: A thematic dance performance based on the poet’s seasonal plays was performed by local students.
Commitment to Cultural Preservation
Director of Information and Cultural Affairs, Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, who was also present at the ceremony, emphasized the department’s commitment to promoting Tagore’s ideals through year-round activities.
”Rabindra Kanan serves as a living monument of the poet’s affection for Tripura. By involving children in these celebrations, we are planting the seeds of our rich cultural heritage in their hearts. The ICA department will continue to organize such events to foster a scientific and artistic temper among the youth,” Bimbisar Bhattacharjee noted.
Statewide Celebrations
While the central tribute took place at Rabindra Kanan, similar celebrations were reported from across the eight districts of Tripura. In Kailashahar, a grand state-level festival was held at Unakoti Kalakshetra, while local clubs in Agartala organized sit-and-draw competitions and musical evenings to celebrate the birth of the Bard.
The event at Rabindra Kanan concluded with the National Anthem, leaving the attendees with a renewed sense of pride in the deep-rooted bond between the poet and the soil of Tripura.
