The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has expressed confidence in Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s ability to provide a lasting solution to the long-pending Tiprasa issue. Speaking at a party programme at Rabindra Bhavan on October 27, Debbarma conveyed his “immense respect” for Shah and his belief that the home minister would address the concerns of the indigenous Tiprasa community.
The TMP had previously signed a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government in March 2024 to promote the overall development of the Tiprasa people. This agreement was signed in the presence of Shah in New Delhi.
Debbarma clarified that the alliance between the TMP and the BJP was finalized in New Delhi and not at the state level. He urged against spreading “baseless rumours” about the partnership, emphasizing that it would not serve any purpose.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Debbarma ridiculed the party’s recent claims about indigenous voters joining its ranks. He sarcastically remarked, “If this trend continues, the Tiprasa population will reach 1.5 crore in three to four months.” Currently, Tripura’s tribal population stands at around 14 lakh.
Debbarma criticized the state government for postponing elections to the village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), highlighting that tribal areas have not seen democratic polls for the past decade.
Expressing disappointment over another issue, Debbarma noted that Rajmata Bhibu Kumari Devi, the wife of late Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, was not invited to the inauguration of the redeveloped Maa Tripureswari temple by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22.
