The Tripura government has launched a free ration distribution program aimed at ensuring that every household can celebrate the upcoming festivals of Durga Puja and Diwali with joy and abundance.
The initiative, which was formally inaugurated by Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury at Fair Price Shop No. 148 in Agartala on Wednesday, will see the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs distributing 2 kg of wheat, 1 kg of sugar, and 500 grams of semolina (suji) to each ration card holder at no cost.
Speaking at the event, Minister Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive celebrations, stating that this festive gift is not only for the poor but for everyone in the state. The Minister expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy for approving the scheme, which is estimated to cost around Rs 7 crore and will be entirely funded by the state government.
Last year, nearly 9.73 lakh ration cards were active in Tripura, with 9.25 lakh beneficiaries availing themselves of the festive ration distribution. This year, the number of cardholders has risen to 9.9 lakh, indicating wider coverage and reach of the program.
Minister Chowdhury concluded his remarks by expressing optimism that the people of Tripura will receive the festive ration with warmth and joy, fostering a sense of togetherness and equality during the celebrations. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that all citizens can partake in the festivities and celebrate the spirit of unity and joy during these auspicious occasions.
